The traditional Western Use (White, red, green, purple, black) has been retained by the Augustana Rite.
Based on statements by P.H.D. Lang, Ceremony and Celebration,(CPH, 1965), it is the frontal that carries the color of the Office or Mass of the day. The super-frontal can be of any (neutral) color.
In this scheme, therefore, the super-frontal color is chosen to carry the seasonal theme through when the color of the Office changes. But, as with all good rules, there are exceptions. This scheme varies only slightly from the traditional Western Use.
During the Sacred Triduum, the altar is not vested; but the ministers are
vested according to the ancient custom. On Good Friday, at the Solemn Liturgy,
the Deacons who chant the Passion are vested in Black dalmatics. However, for
the Communion, Violet vestments are worn.
During the Easter Vigil, Violet vestments are worn. The Deacon, however, vests
in White for the singing of the Easter Praeconium. Thereafter, he again is
vested in Violet.
For the Mass of the Easter Vigil, which is the first Mass of Easter, the
vestments are exchanged for White or Gold.
